The main line of sector activities is the development of scientific fundamentals and practical measures for the restoration, including with the use of aquaculture techniques, of various species of sturgeons for the conservation of their genetic pool and increase in their population numbers. The sector activities are carried in an integrated manner with the combination of scientific and technological resources of interdisciplinary works of the Institute related to the development of regulatory and technological basis of aquaculture and application of modern biotechnologies and genetic studies in aquaculture.

The importance of sector activities is defined by high-priority effective taking over the problem of the conservation of the genetic pool of rare and endangered fish species with the use of pond and industrial aquaculture. All sturgeon species, which remained in native fish fauna, are listed as endangered in the Red Book of Ukraine, IUCN list, Bern and Bonn conventions, CITES and European Red Lists that reflects international importance of this problem.

The specifics of scientific activities of the sector involve an integrated performance of scientific and research works with the use of conventional ichthyological, hydrochemical and hydrobiological methods. At the same time, genetic and modern cryobiology methods are used.

Main activities of the sector include:

  1. study of the biological peculiarities and genetic structure of sturgeon populations and brood stock in the process of the improvement of the methods of their reproduction and breeding at enterprises of pond and industrial aquaculture;
  2. study of biological peculiarities and methods of the cultivation of a perspective object of commercial sturgeon culture – North American paddlefish in the process of the development of technologies for its cultivation in Ukraine;
  3. study of the environmental conditions of inland water bodies based on the suitability parameters of biotopes for the restoration of populations of endangered fish species;
  4. improvement of the system of selective breeding works and use of genetic resources of rare and endangered fish species in Ukrainian aquaculture;
  5. creation of genetic collection stocks of rare and endangered fish species (sturgeon species) in controlled conditions at aquaculture enterprises of different types;
  6. study of the peculiarity of domestication of different sturgeon species in the process of forming brood stocks in aquaculture;
  7. creation of the collections of cryopreserved gametes of rare and endangered fish species for increasing the efficiency of studies on the conservation of valuable genetic pool of various sturgeon species.

Main trends of the sector activities regarding the provision of methodical aid and services to interested subjects of aquaculture business is:

  • development and scientific support of the projects dealing with the restoration of various sturgeon species during the process of their use in aquaculture and restoration of their populations in natural water bodies;
  • determination of the suitability of environmental state of inland water bodies for fisheries related activities on the reproduction and rearing of sturgeon species;
  • consulting on the issues of the creation of brood stocks of sturgeon species and optimization of the ways of freshwater aquaculture at enterprises of different types.

The main aim of the department activities is the development of scientific fundamentals and modern regulatory and technological basis for effective domestic aquaculture with increased biological productivity of fisheries areas in conditions of environmentally friendly use of natural resources. The priority problems of the scientific support of fisheries sector of Ukraine, which the department works upon, include, in particular, the improvement of the technologies and practical measures of integrated intensification of pond fish farming and development of high intensity technologies of freshwater aquaculture in conditions of industrial type enterprises.

The importance of the department activity is related to the necessity of the exposure of sector development reserves with the development of economically sound approaches in modern aquaculture. Priority important was the development of resource saving technologies for freshwater aquaculture aimed at significant increase in the efficiency of the use of natural bioproductive potential of inland water bodies of different categories. At the same time, in cases when it is economically sound, the advantage in the studies is given to the development of intensive methods of fish rearing with the use of a wide range of cultivation objects with significant adjustment of traditional technologies.

The specifics of scientific activities at the department include comprehensive scientific and research works with the use of generally accepted ichthyological, hydrobiological, physiological-biochemical, and hydrochemical studies.

Main research areas, which prevail in the department activities, are:

  1. studies of cultivated fish productivity in the process of the improvement of the methods of their reproduction and rearing at aquaculture enterprises with different levels of intensification;
  2. development of new low-cost technological approaches for resource-saving pond aquaculture based on broadening the species structure in the polyculture and rational fish feeding with the use of non-traditional feed components of plant origin;
  3. application of environmentally friendly methods for stimulation of natural food supply development for obtaining organic fish products based on the use of a complex of non-traditional fertilizing substance;
  4. study of physiological-biochemical and immunological peculiarities of fish resistance during the process of the improvement of the viability of fish culture objects reared at different technologies of freshwater aquaculture;
  5. development of the ways for increasing productivity and improvement of environmental conditions in ponds with the use of a complex of enhancement methods and new express methods for the determination of the level of aquatic medium pollution with toxicants of different origins during the process of the development of aquaculture technologies;
  6. improvement of the biotechnologies for invertebrate aquaculture objects.

Main lines of the department activities related to the provision of propositions and services to interested subjects of aquaculture business are:

  • development and scientific support in the realization of projects and programs on the reproduction and rearing of fish cultivation for different types of aquaculture;
  • study and justification of the suitability of physicochemical parameters of aquatic media for effective aquaculture activities;
  • consultative aid regarding different issues in aquaculture, including rational exploitation of the water bodies of fish farms.

Aim of the sector – selection, formation, and evaluation of the replacement and brood stocks of high productive Ukrainian carp breeds and Amur wild carp, breeding of high productive and disease resistant carp cross breeds and hybrids based on existing breeds.

Importance of the sector activities. Carp culture of Ukraine has been continuously working on the enrichment of own genetic pool with new productive and disease resistant carp breeds, cross breeds, and hybrids. The Sector of fish selection carries out selection and genetic studies aimed at improving the breed qualities of Ukrainian carp breeds, including Lubin framed and scaled intrabreed types. We also perform rearing of Amur wild carp, the properties of the organism of which are used for the creation of high productive hybrids.

We use commonly accepted differential methods of the selection of fish at different stages of their development with the use of electronic markers as well as the methods of the genetic identification of individual fish, dendrologic assessment of the genetic relationships of carp breeds. We also use the method of fish sperm cryopreservation for preserving and restoring pure lines of selected fish species and breeds.

Major areas of the sector activities:

  1. formation of desired morphological parameters in the carp of local origin by crossing high productive breeds and their multistep selection;
  2. use of modern cryobiotechnologies in fish selection – as a way to improve the genetic pool of fish culture objects.

Propositions of services for individuals and legal entities:

  • spring-autumn evaluation for forming fish brood stocks;
  • recommendations on different forms of carp rearing by individual orders;
  • procedure and management of fish spawning processes.

Aim of the sector: scientific works aimed at increasing the biological productivity of water bodies and rational using their biological resources by applying new environmentally friendly and cost-effective fertilizers.

Importance of the sector activities: currently, there is a world’s trend for reducing the operational expenses of fish rearing process including the expenses for artificial feed procurement. The best option is the stimulation of the development of natural food supply in ponds and obtaining bioorganic products. Correct and effective use of natural resources provides an opportunity to obtain cheap fish products.

Studies are carried out with the use of commonly accepted hydrochemical, hydrobiological, microbiological, ecological, ichthyological, aquaculture, and statistical methods.

Major areas of the sector activities:

  1. search for new non-traditional fertilizing substances for increasing biological productivity of cultures of food organisms;
  2. search for new non-traditional ways of pond fertilization for increasing their biological productivity;
  3. study of the peculiarities of the formation of fish pond hydrochemical and hydrobiological regimes when applying non-traditional feed supplements;
  4. study of the effects of pollutants of natural and artificial origin, heavy metals and pesticides on the ecological state of fish ponds;
  5. monitoring of the ecological state of fisheries important water object.

Propositions of services for individuals and legal entities:

  • full and partial chemical analysis of water quality in fish ponds, recommendations for the optimization of aquatic environments;
  • comprehensive studies of the development of natural food supply (zooplankton, zoobenthos) of fish ponds and recommendations for their increase;
  • consulting in the use of traditional and non-traditional kinds of fertilizers, ways of their application in fish ponds;
  • environmental assessment of fisheries important water bodies based on hydrochemical and hydrobiological parameters that allows determining the water body trophicity and production of food organisms for fish taking into account the allowable level of the use of food resources.

A Laboratory of water quality (certified by the SE «Ukrmetrteststandart» (attestation certificate №PT-223/15) operates as a part of the research station. It allows analyzing and assessing water quality based on following parameters:

  • surface waters, pond water, tank water (dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, pH, permanganate value, ammonium nitrogen, nitrates, nitrites, phosphates, total iron, ammonium, chlorides, sulfates, total hardness, calcium, potassium-sodium, mineralization, cadmium, copper, lead, zinc, cobalt, nickel, manganese);
  • waste (return) waters (odor, transparency, pH, ammonium nitrogen, nitrates, nitrites, phosphates, total iron, chlorides, sulfates, total hardness, calcium, magnesium, mineralization);
  • drinking water from water supply systems, wells, aquifers (pH, permanganate value, ammonium nitrogen, nitrates, nitrites, phosphates, total iron, hydrocarbonates, chlorides, sulfates, total hardness, calcium, magnesium, mineralization).

Aim of the sector – studies of biological and environmentally-geographic peculiarities of the spread of fish disease agents.

Importance of the sector activities – determination of the patterns of the occurrence of the most common fish diseases in aquaculture in current environmental conditions.

Parasitological studies are carried out using standard methods of I.E. Bykhovskaya-Pavlovskaya (1969) and K.V. Sekretariuk (2001), study of parasite effects on fish hematological and biochemical parameters including protein content determination – [Bradford M.M., 1976], study of dien conjugate concentration – [Stalnaya I.D., 1977], determination of TBA-active products – [Korabeinikova S.N., 1989], superoxiddismutase activity – [Dubinina E.E., 1983], catalase activity – [Koroliuk M.A., 1988].

Major areas of the laboratory activities:

  1. determination of the effect of immune-modulating preparations of fish resistance;
  2. development of the methods for the use of new therapeutic and prophylactic products aimed at increasing fish survivability rate at different technological stages;
  3. study of the effect of new disinfectants (e.g., Kristal 1000, Epidez, Don, Vitan, etc.) on pathogenic microflora; complex studies of the effect of biologically active preparations of plant origin (milk thistle, amaranth, purple coneflower) and synthetic preparations (Enroflox, Furazolidone, Brovaceptol) on the course of fish aeromonosis.
  4. study of the effects of different preparations on crustacean parasites (crustaceoses): Sinergasilus lieni and Lernaea cyprinacea.

Propositions of services for individuals and legal entities:

  • parasitological studies of fish;
  • development of methods for prevention and treatment of parasitic and infectious diseases of pond fish;
  • study of epizootic situations in fish farms.
